Tensions flared in the eastern Libyan city of Ajdabiya this week after a group of Argentina supporters were arrested when post-match celebrations descended into disorder, prompting police intervention.
The fans had gathered on the streets to celebrate Argentina’s progression in the ongoing World Cup, while also mocking Egypt’s elimination from the competition. What began as jubilant scenes reportedly escalated after they encountered a group of Egyptian supporters, leading to a heated confrontation.
According to local authorities, the altercation disrupted traffic and public movement, forcing security personnel to step in and disperse the crowds before restoring order.
Police subsequently arrested several of the Argentina supporters involved in the disturbance.
The incident has since attracted widespread attention after videos circulating on social media appeared to show officers forcibly shaving the heads of the detained fans.
Authorities defended the action, claiming it was a disciplinary response to what they described as disorderly conduct and provocative behaviour directed at Egyptian supporters. However, the measure has sparked debate online, with many questioning the treatment of those arrested and whether it was proportionate.
No injuries were officially reported, and police have not announced whether additional charges will be brought against those detained.
