A member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu, has sparked widespread debate after urging residents of his constituency to consider acquiring firearms for self-defence in response to the worsening security situation in the state. The lawmaker made the remarks during an engagement with his constituents, expressing concern over the persistent attacks by armed bandits and the perceived inability of security agencies to adequately protect rural communities.
According to Zubairu, residents should withdraw their savings and prioritise measures to protect themselves and their families, suggesting that those who are legally permitted should acquire weapons for self-defence. His comments followed renewed attacks on communities in Zamfara, where banditry, kidnappings and killings have continued despite ongoing military operations.
The remarks have generated mixed reactions, with some residents arguing that communities have become increasingly vulnerable, while others warned that encouraging civilians to arm themselves could further escalate insecurity and undermine law enforcement efforts.
Security experts have repeatedly maintained that the possession of firearms in Nigeria is regulated by law and that only licensed individuals may legally own approved weapons.
Zamfara remains one of the states most affected by banditry in north-west Nigeria, with authorities continuing military and police operations aimed at restoring security and protecting affected communities.
