A 30-year-old man, identified as Abubakar Auwal, has died after he was allegedly beaten by a mob over claims that he was involved in an affair with a married woman in Kano State.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 24 in the Sheka area of Kano and has led to the arrest of three suspects by the Kano State Police Command.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the victim was allegedly lured by Abubakar Ali, 40, and Sulaiman Lawan, 27, following allegations that he was having a relationship with Ali’s wife.
According to Kiyawa, officers from the Sheka Police Division responded to a distress call and found the victim unconscious after he had allegedly been severely beaten.
“The victim was found in a comatose condition after he was brutally assaulted. He was immediately evacuated to the hospital for medical attention,” the police spokesperson said.
Kiyawa disclosed that three suspects, including Ali, Lawan and a 22-year-old married woman, Hafsat Umar, were arrested in connection with the incident.
He added that the victim was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where he was later confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
The police spokesperson said investigations are ongoing and that the suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the probe.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, condemned the killing and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“The public should refrain from taking the law into their own hands. The Nigeria Police Force is empowered by the Constitution to investigate crimes and ensure suspects are prosecuted through due process,” Bakori said.
He assured residents that the command would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
