The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has raised alarm over the increasing abuse of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes by unauthorised vehicles, including some military personnel, paramilitary agencies, local government buses, LCDA vehicles, and private motorists, warning that violators now risk fines, prosecution, and vehicle impoundment. The agency made this known on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in Lagos, as concerns mount over the misuse of one of the state’s most important transport corridors.
LAMATA stressed that BRT lanes are reserved strictly for regulated franchise buses, with the only exceptions being emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks during active emergencies.
According to the agency, the growing lawlessness on the dedicated lanes is undermining the efficiency, safety, speed, and purpose of the mass transit system created to ease commuting in Africa’s most congested megacity.
The warning is significant because Lagos’ BRT network was designed to provide fast, reliable, and affordable urban mobility, and lane violations directly disrupt scheduled operations, worsen traffic, and endanger passengers.
LAMATA said it would now enforce the rules without regard to status or affiliation, insisting that restoring discipline on the corridors is essential to preserving order in the state’s transport system.
