Kogi varsity final-year student found dead by roadside

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a female undergraduate whose body was discovered beside the Lokoja-Abuja Highway.

The victim, identified as Sarah Idoko, was reportedly found lifeless on Saturday evening around the Crusher area in the Felele axis of Lokoja.

Residents of the area said a vehicle was seen stopping briefly near the location before driving off at high speed, sparking suspicion among onlookers.

The body was later spotted by passers-by, who alerted security operatives to the development.

There was initial uncertainty over the identity of the deceased after an identification card recovered at the scene suggested she was a Higher National Diploma student of Office Technology Management at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

However, police authorities subsequently confirmed that the deceased was a final-year student of the Federal University Lokoja.

Speaking on the incident, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, said detectives had begun efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and identify those behind the act.

“The command is carrying out a thorough investigation to determine what led to the death and ensure that anyone connected to the crime is brought to justice,” he said.

Kankarofi assured residents that the findings of the investigation would be made known upon its conclusion, adding that the command remained committed to securing justice for the victim.

Meanwhile, the Association of Nigeria Female Students, Kogi State Chapter, condemned the killing and called for swift action by security agencies. In a statement signed by its State Coordinator, Celina James, the group urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and improve security around schools and student-populated communities.

The association noted that the incident had heightened concerns over the safety of students and other residents along the Felele corridor, an area that has witnessed several security challenges in recent years.
