King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended the throne as the world’s youngest reigning monarch at just three years old, has died in Uganda at age 34.
The traditional ruler of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda passed away on Thursday, according to an announcement made Friday by the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. While the BBC reported that an official cause of death was not disclosed, Ugandan media cited a government minister who stated the monarch had been critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States.
Describing the passing as an “immeasurable loss,” Akiiki urged the people of Tooro to remain “united, calm and prayerful” during this period of mourning.
Oyo became king in 1995 following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Rukidi III. Due to his age, a regency was established to oversee the kingdom until he reached adulthood; he was formally crowned in 2010 at age 18. Guinness World Records recognized him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, a title he held for his unique journey from toddler king to an influential cultural leader.
As the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom—founded in the early 19th century—Oyo was a prominent figure in Uganda known for his advocacy in youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
Although the kingdom holds no constitutional political authority in Uganda, it retains significant cultural influence. Addressing concerns regarding the future of the monarchy, Akiiki confirmed that the succession is secure.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured,” Akiiki stated. “His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country, including from the Buganda Kingdom, which honored Oyo as a vital figure in Uganda. His death concludes a 31-year reign that began in his childhood and left a lasting mark on the nation’s traditional landscape.
