Nigeria’s apex court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately restore the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the ballot for the 2027 general elections, marking a major victory for the opposition party.
In its ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria affirmed the leadership of David Mark, effectively settling the party’s protracted internal crisis and overturning actions that led to its earlier delisting.
The decision follows weeks of uncertainty after INEC announced it had complied with a court directive to remove the ADC from the ballot, amid ongoing legal disputes over the party’s leadership.
With the latest judgment, the ADC is now cleared to participate fully in the 2027 electoral process. The ruling also opens the door for prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to consolidate their political ambitions on the party’s platform ahead of primaries.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking re-election under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for a potentially high-stakes contest in 2027.
The ruling represents a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, restoring a key opposition platform just as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.
