A four-storey building under construction has collapsed at Independence Layout, Enugu, trapping six people and leaving one person feared dead.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, with emergency responders rescuing four victims who were taken to hospital for treatment.
Officials said another person was later recovered from the rubble and taken to a hospital to determine his condition.
The Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Agency, Uche Anya, said the building had been sealed by the government over alleged structural integrity issues and non-compliance with building regulations.
Anya said the property was originally approved in 2021 but had failed subsequent regulatory inspections.
Rescue operations involving SEMA, NEMA, the Fire Service, Police, Red Cross and other agencies were ongoing as officials worked to ensure nobody remained trapped beneath the debris.
