Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has withdrawn from the 2027 Ogun State governorship race, reshaping the political landscape ahead of the polls.
Her decision comes shortly after the All Progressives Congress (APC) adopted Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its consensus candidate.
In a statement released Monday night, Obasanjo said her withdrawal followed deliberations at a crucial party meeting in Abeokuta, where leaders rallied behind a single candidate.
“I congratulate him and wish him every success,” she said, expressing appreciation to party leaders for the opportunity to contest. She also thanked her supporters across Ogun State for their loyalty and encouragement throughout her campaign.
“Based on recent developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration,” she added, urging her supporters to remain united and hopeful.
Her exit from the race is widely seen as a strategic move that strengthens party cohesion and clears the way for Adeola as the APC prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, emerged as the party’s preferred candidate following a high-level caucus meeting at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta, consolidating his position ahead of the primaries.
