Iran has appointed a new head of its Supreme National Security Council following the reported death of top official Ali Larijani in an air strike amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
State media confirmed on Tuesday that Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, has been named as Larijani’s successor.
Zolghadr is a senior figure within Iran’s security structure, having previously served as a deputy commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and held key positions in both the interior and justice ministries.
Larijani, a longtime insider in Iran’s political system, was reportedly killed in a recent Israeli airstrike as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to escalate.
His death marks a significant development in the ongoing war, as he played a major role in shaping Iran’s national security and strategic decisions.
The swift appointment of Zolghadr signals Tehran’s move to maintain stability within its security leadership during a period of heightened military confrontation.
The conflict, which has already drawn in multiple countries, continues to intensify with no clear end in sight.
