The legal representatives of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have condemned what they described as a dangerous and unlawful public call for their client’s extrajudicial killing, warning that such statements threaten the rule of law and undermine Nigeria’s judicial process.
In a statement issued by the legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, criticised remarks allegedly made by Chigozie Nnabugwu during a national television programme, in which he reportedly urged the Federal Government to kill Kanu as a solution to insecurity in the South-East.
The lawyers described the comments as inflammatory, irresponsible and incompatible with the principles of constitutional democracy.
According to the legal team, regardless of the allegations against Kanu, he remains entitled to all the rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution, including the right to life and a fair trial.
They argued that encouraging the unlawful killing of any citizen amounts to an attack on the nation’s justice system and could incite violence or prejudice ongoing judicial proceedings.
The lawyers called on the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and urged media organisations to exercise greater editorial responsibility by preventing the broadcast of statements capable of promoting hatred or encouraging unlawful acts.
They also demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from those responsible, stressing that justice can only be achieved through due process and not through calls for extrajudicial action.
