“Instagram Is Not For Men, But Girls” – Elon Musk stirs controversy

By George Omagbemi

Elon Musk has reignited debate over Instagram after again declaring that “Instagram is for girls” in a post on X.

Musk made the remark while responding to Geiger Capital, which announced that it had deleted its Instagram account, describing the platform as an “inherently female app” with “zero benefit.” Musk replied: “Instagram is for girls.”

The comment quickly spread across social media, with users debating Musk’s characterisation of the Meta-owned platform and whether Instagram should be associated with a particular gender.

The latest remark is not the first time Musk has used the phrase. In May, he made a similar comment while discussing social-media habits and also questioned men who shared their Instagram profiles with him. Those earlier remarks attracted criticism over gender stereotypes.

Musk’s latest post comes against the backdrop of his long-running rivalry with Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Musk owns X, while Meta operates Instagram and Threads, which competes with X in the social-media space.

Musk offered no explanation or evidence for his latest characterisation. Instagram has a broad user base, and the remark remains Musk’s personal view rather than an established fact.
