The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the enforcement of a restriction on motorcycle operations across the state as part of new measures to tackle rising insecurity.
Under the new directive, commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, are prohibited from operating between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, while parading over 70 suspected criminals recently arrested in Akure.
Adeleye disclosed that the governor also directed all motorcycle riders and owners in the state to register and obtain certified operational documents within two weeks from the Amotekun Corps headquarters or local government commands.
He warned that any operator who fails to comply with the directive would be considered to be operating illegally and may be treated as a collaborator with criminal elements.
As part of the broader security measures, the state government also announced the prohibition of cart pushing in major metropolitan areas to enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and maintain environmental order.
Similarly, all dealers involved in the business of condemned iron scrap metals have been directed to register with the state government within two weeks or face enforcement actions.
The government also banned the display and sale of farm produce along major roads, directing traders to move their goods to approved markets and authorised locations.
Adeleye explained that the new measures were introduced to strengthen security operations and curb the activities of kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminal elements operating within the state.
During the parade, the Amotekun commander revealed that 70 suspects were arrested in recent operations, including 18 suspected kidnappers, 39 individuals accused of breaching law and order, one suspect linked to anti-grazing violations, one human trafficking suspect, and 11 persons arrested for cult-related offences.
He assured residents that security agencies in the state would work together to ensure strict enforcement of the new directives and maintain peace across the state.
Residents were also urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and provide useful information that could assist in combating crime.
