In a decisive move for Nigeria’s industrial sector, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, the nation’s leading indigenous auto company, confirmed it now employs 8,000 workers and is set to expand with a new tractor plant at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The announcement was made on 22 February 2026 by CEO Chief Innocent Chukwuma, following a tour of the firm’s main facilities in Nnewi, Anambra State, with executives of the Bank of Industry (BoI).
The expansion aims to enhance agricultural mechanisation, create at least 2,000 new jobs and strengthen local manufacturing capacity. Since its founding in 2007, Innoson has produced buses, trucks and cars while emphasising local content, making it a rare example of homegrown industrial success in Nigeria.
Chukwuma highlighted inclusive employment, particularly women in technical roles, reflecting a drive for balanced workforce development. Economists like Harvard’s Dani Rodrik note that industrial employment is crucial for structural transformation and sustainable economic growth. Innoson’s partnership with BoI demonstrates how private enterprise, supported by institutional frameworks, can spur job creation, technology transfer and long-term economic resilience in Nigeria.
This expansion solidifies Innoson’s position as a key driver of industrialisation and national development.
