The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking a stay of execution on a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development comes after a Federal High Court ruling delivered on Monday by Justice Peter Lifu, which directed the deregistration of the ADC, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), over alleged failure to meet statutory conditions required for maintaining registration.
Following the judgment, INEC filed an appeal and is now urging the appellate court to suspend enforcement of the ruling pending the determination of the substantive appeal.
The commission’s application seeks to temporarily halt any administrative actions arising from the judgment, effectively preventing immediate deregistration of the affected parties.
