‘I’lll Be 80 Before It’s Resolved’: Mourinho Mocks Man City’s Financial Case

By George Omagbemi

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has sarcastically questioned the length of Manchester City’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League, joking that he could be 80 years old before a final verdict is reached.

Mourinho made the remarks during an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, expressing frustration with the lengthy process and the prospect of further appeals.

“I would rather laugh about it,” Mourinho said, adding that a ruling would eventually come, followed by appeals and potentially further legal proceedings.

“I’ll be 80!” he joked.

The comments followed a ruling by an independent commission that found Manchester City guilty of charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The commission also upheld three of four charges concerning the club’s alleged failure to cooperate with the league’s investigation.

Manchester City has denied wrongdoing and lodged an appeal, arguing that the commission’s findings contain material errors. The appeal process remains ongoing, and no final sanctions have been determined.

Mourinho has a personal connection to the controversy. During his time as Manchester United manager, his team finished second behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the 2017/18 Premier League season.

City’s financial case has attracted widespread attention because of its potential implications for the club and English football. However, any punishment will depend on the ongoing legal process.

Mourinho’s remarks highlight the uncertainty surrounding when the dispute will finally be settled.
