Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared that he would leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu ever disrespects the Catholic Bishops or the political opposition.
Kalu made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday while dismissing claims that President Tinubu had insulted the Catholic Church.
The senator said the President enjoys a cordial relationship with Catholic leaders and has consistently received members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria whenever they requested meetings.
He described the bishops as the conscience of the nation, noting that they have a responsibility to speak on issues affecting governance and the welfare of Nigerians.
According to him, there is nothing wrong with the bishops expressing their opinions, adding that any president who refuses to engage with them would be making a grave mistake.
Kalu insisted that Tinubu had not shown any disrespect towards the Catholic bishops, describing reports suggesting otherwise as false.
He, however, warned that he would have no reason to remain in the APC if the President ever disrespected the Catholic Church or sought to undermine the opposition.
Speaking on the 2027 presidential election, Kalu expressed confidence that Tinubu would win a second term, arguing that the administration’s achievements in infrastructure, security, and economic reforms had not been sufficiently communicated to Nigerians.
He assessed the President’s performance at 65 per cent, saying it could rise to 70 per cent by September or October, while maintaining that the opposition remains too fragmented to mount a serious challenge to the APC.
