Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has pledged sustained investment in police sports and the development of sporting talents within the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu made the commitment while receiving Commonwealth Games 400m hurdles champion, Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The IGP said Nathaniel’s feat underscored the strong bond between the Nigeria Police Force and sports, noting that the achievement demonstrated what police personnel could accomplish when given the right platform and adequate support.
According to him, sports and policing share key values, including discipline, teamwork and excellence.
“The Nigeria Police Force and sports have always been twins, bound together by shared values of discipline, teamwork and excellence.
“This victory is a powerful reminder of that bond, and of what our personnel can achieve when given the platform and support to thrive both in service and in competition,” Disu said.
The Police chief assured officers with sporting talents that the Force would continue to create opportunities for them to develop and compete at the highest level.
He said the Nigeria Police Force would continue to identify, nurture and celebrate talented personnel within its ranks.
“I want Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, and every officer watching, to know that this Force will continue to invest in and support police sports.
“We will keep identifying, nurturing and celebrating talent within our ranks, because a Force that is strong in body and spirit is a Force that serves the nation better,” he said.
Disu, who described himself as a sportsman, said he was particularly proud of Nathaniel’s accomplishment, adding that the victory had brought honour to the athlete, the Police Force and Nigeria.
“Corporal Ezekiel Nathaniel, you have honoured your uniform, your Force and your country. Congratulations, and may this be the first of many more victories to come,” the IGP said.
