Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Jimi Disu has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman following the fatal shooting of a suspect in Delta State.
The directive followed findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee, which concluded that the officer acted in gross violation of police regulations governing the use of firearms, particularly in the widely circulated Effurun incident involving the death of Mene Ogidi.
Authorities confirmed that Usman, alongside other implicated officers, will not only be dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force but also handed over for criminal prosecution, reinforcing the institution’s stated zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power.
The incident, captured in a viral video showing the victim restrained before being shot, triggered nationwide condemnation and renewed calls for police reform and accountability.
Analysts say the swift disciplinary action represents an attempt to restore public confidence in law enforcement, though skepticism remains over whether such measures will translate into sustained institutional reform.
