Prominent American pastor Dr. Jamal Bryant has cautioned church leaders against becoming overly dependent on artificial intelligence, warning that tools such as ChatGPT should never take the place of prayer and spiritual preparation.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Jamal Bryant Podcast, the senior pastor said ministers must be careful not to allow technology to replace their personal relationship with God.
“If you’re not careful, ChatGPT for a preacher will replace prayer,” Bryant said.
The remark has sparked discussion among church leaders and social media users about the growing role of artificial intelligence in sermon preparation, Bible study and other ministry activities.
Bryant’s comments highlight concerns that while AI can assist with research, writing and administrative tasks, it should not become a substitute for spiritual discernment, biblical study or seeking divine guidance through prayer.
As AI tools become increasingly common across different professions, religious leaders continue to debate how the technology can be used responsibly without compromising the core principles of faith and ministry.
Bryant’s statement serves as a reminder that, in his view, technology should complement ministry rather than replace the spiritual disciplines that underpin it.
