Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor, , has publicly apologised for announcing the breakdown of his marriage on social media, admitting that he should have handled the matter privately.
In a post shared on his X account on Saturday, Bashir acknowledged that making his divorce public was an error and expressed regret over the decision.
“I made a mistake a few weeks ago and I would like to apologize. Personal matters should be kept private,” he wrote.
He added that he had also personally apologised to his former wife, Halima Nwakaego Kazaure.
Bashir and Halima, the daughter of former Minister of Labour and Productivity, , got married in 2020 and welcomed a set of twins the following year.
The controversy began after Bashir publicly disclosed that his marriage had ended while responding to social media users who questioned his admiration for another woman online.
At the time, he revealed that he was divorced and attributed the collapse of the marriage to what he described as “Gen Z wahala.”
“I’m not married yet. I am divorced. Yes, she’s from Bida, and yes, I divorced my first wife,” he wrote.
He further stirred reactions by praising Nupe women, stating that they treat their husbands “like emperors.”
In another social media post, Bashir claimed that he had never initiated a romantic relationship with any woman and that women had always made the first move.
“I don’t toast babes. Never have. It’s not even about bragging rights or pride,” he wrote.
He also disclosed that his former wife was the one who proposed marriage to him, a revelation that generated widespread debate online.
His latest apology has sparked fresh reactions from social media users, with opinions sharply divided.
While some commended him for acknowledging his mistake, others criticised his earlier comments about his marriage and relationships.
The public apology comes weeks after his divorce announcement became a major topic of discussion across social media platforms, drawing attention to the balance between public life and personal privacy.
