A grim discovery in South Africa’s Komati River has intensified an ongoing police investigation into the disappearance of a 59-year-old businessman, after human remains were found inside a crocodile.
The remains were recovered near Komatipoort on Saturday, as search teams continued efforts to locate the missing man. Authorities are now working to establish whether the remains belong to the businessman, who had been reported missing a week earlier.
According to police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, a coordinated search operation had been underway involving multiple agencies, including the South African Police Service Search and Rescue Unit, NatJoints, SANParks, Emergency Medical Services, private security firm Securecon, and the local port management committee.
The businessman, believed to be from Gauteng, was last seen after his Ford Ranger was discovered lodged at a low-lying bridge along the river — a detail that first raised concerns among investigators.
Masondo explained that during the search, a crocodile was identified as a possible factor in the man’s disappearance.
“After a week-long search, the team located a crocodile suspected to have been involved in the incident,” he said. “Following the necessary approvals, the animal was euthanised, and human remains were subsequently recovered.”
The discovery has added a sombre dimension to the case, with forensic teams now preparing to conduct DNA analysis to confirm the identity of the remains.
The incident has also drawn widespread public attention, with video footage circulating on social media showing the crocodile being airlifted from the river by helicopter a stark visual that has underscored the scale and seriousness of the operation.
Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the coordinated efforts of the search teams, describing the operation as both complex and necessary under the circumstances.
Komati River runs through a region known for its proximity to the renowned Kruger National Park, where wildlife-human encounters, though rare, can have tragic consequences.
Authorities say investigations remain ongoing as they work to provide answers to the family of the missing man.
