AKURE, ONDO STATE — For decades, Ondo State has been referred to as a “treasure chest” filled with untapped wealth. From the vast deposits of bitumen in the south to the fertile cocoa and coffee belts in the north, the resources have always been present, yet the political will to harness them has often been lacking. Today, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the narrative is shifting from dormant potential to active production.
The Coffee Comeback: A Bold Step Forward
Today’s launch of the 1,000-Hectare Coffee Revival Project marks more than just an agricultural milestone; it serves as a signal to the world that Ondo is ready to re-enter the global export market. By forming partnerships with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Lingzhi Global Nigeria Limited, Governor Aiyedatiwa is not merely planting seeds, he is cultivating jobs for thousands of young people and establishing a sustainable wealth chain that transcends oil revenue.
This initiative joins an expanding roster of revitalised ambitions, including the long-awaited revalidation of the Ondo Deep Sea Port licence and the planned bitumen exploration. These are not mere campaign promises; they represent the “sleeping giants” of the Sunshine State finally awakening.
A Charge for Consistency: Moving from Flags to Factories
While the launch of these projects has ignited hope among the populace, the true measure of success will hinge on the speed of execution. History is replete with groundbreaking ceremonies that never materialised into tangible results. The people of Ondo State are now calling upon the administration to ensure that work on the Coffee Revival Project and the bitumen sites commences without delay. The transition from ceremonial shovels to active machinery must be immediate. We urge the Governor to maintain stringent oversight on contractors and technical partners to ensure these sites transform into bustling centres of activity before the onset of the next rainy season.
Addressing Left Behind Projects
As we celebrate these achievements, the Governor’s Revival Train must not halt here. To effectuate a true transformation of the state, the administration must also focus on other critical yet stalled investments:
- The Ayetoro Shoreline Protection: The City of the Sea is being engulfed by the Atlantic Ocean. Reviving this project is no longer merely an investment; it is a humanitarian imperative to save a historic community from vanishing.
- The Akure Stadium Complex: To allow our youth to flourish, the abandoned state stadium must be completed to serve as a hub for talent discovery and regional sports tourism.
- The Sunshine Free Trade Zone Infrastructure: The proposed petrochemical and fertiliser plants in Ilaje require urgent infrastructure links to ensure that once constructed, their products can reach the global market.
A Legacy in the Making
Governor Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated the vision to identify what was lost. Now, he must exhibit the tenacity to see these initiatives through to completion. By ensuring that the 1,000-hectare coffee farms become a reality and by addressing the remaining neglected infrastructure, he will not merely be remembered as a Governor who launched projects; he will be remembered as the leader who built a modern Ondo.
