Hollywood actress Catherine O’Hara, widely recognised for her roles in Home Alone and the television series Schitt’s Creek, has died at the age of 71.
Her talent agency, Creative Artists Agency, confirmed that she passed away on Friday at her residence in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. No details were given about the cause of her death.
In a tribute shared on its Instagram page, the agency described O’Hara as an exceptional talent and a cherished individual, quoting several film industry figures who praised her comic brilliance, artistic depth and lasting influence. The agency also noted that representing her for over three decades was a source of great pride and joy.
The statement highlighted her journey from her early days on the sketch comedy show SCTV to her memorable performances in films such as Home Alone and Beetlejuice. It also referenced her Emmy-winning portrayal of Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek and her more recent appearances, noting that her unique wit and energy defined every role she took on.
O’Hara became a global household name for playing the anxious but loving mother of Macaulay Culkin’s character in the first two Home Alone films. The role cemented her status as a standout performer in family comedy films.
She later gained renewed acclaim and a new generation of admirers through her role in Schitt’s Creek, where she appeared in 80 episodes and earned widespread praise for her performance.
Her film career included notable titles such as Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, Beetlejuice and its sequel, among many others that reinforced her reputation as one of comedy’s most distinctive voices.
A Canadian by birth, O’Hara began her career in improvisational comedy and went on to enjoy a career that spanned decades across film, television and stage. She is survived by her family and leaves behind a significant legacy in comedy and popular culture.
