Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has warned that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should be held responsible if he or any member of his family is attacked or killed during his senatorial campaign in Delta State.
Omo-Agege made the allegation in a statement issued on Thursday while flagging off his campaign in Uvwie Local Government Area.
The former senator urged the Nigerian public, international community, civil society organisations, media and security agencies to take note of what he described as “disturbing and increasingly credible threats” allegedly emanating from the Delta State Government House in Asaba.
He warned that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should be held accountable if anything happens to him or members of his family during the campaign period.
Omo-Agege said the campaign would take him across the eight local government areas of Delta Central Senatorial District.
The former Deputy President of the Ninth Senate is seeking a return to the Senate on the platform of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).
His political relationship with Oborevwori has remained strained since the 2023 Delta State governorship election, in which Omo-Agege contested as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oborevwori, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), won the election with 360,234 votes against Omo-Agege’s 240,229 votes, securing victory in 21 of the state’s 25 local government areas.
The Supreme Court subsequently affirmed Oborevwori’s election, after which Omo-Agege accepted the judgment and congratulated the governor.
Despite the court’s decision, the two politicians have continued to differ over political leadership and influence in Delta State.
As the 2027 election approaches, Omo-Agege’s latest allegation has heightened concerns over the safety of political actors and their families during campaign activities.
The Delta State Government had not, as of the time of filing this report, publicly responded to the allegation.
