Suspected armed gunmen unleashed terror on the Gari Ya Waye area of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, killing several residents and injuring others in a late‑night attack that plunged the community into fear and panic. Witnesses said the assailants, heavily armed, arrived around 7:50 pm on Sunday, 29 March 2026, opened fire indiscriminately, then vanished into the darkness while terrified families fled for safety.
Although official casualty figures have not yet been released, local sources reported multiple deaths and gunshot wounds, with survivors rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Residents described the assault as swift and brutal, noting that sporadic gunfire echoed through the streets as people hid in their homes or ran for cover.
In response, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang imposed a 48‑hour curfew in Jos North, effective from midnight of 29 March to 1 April 2026, in hopes of preventing further violence and aiding security operations. Authorities condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked,” urging calm and cooperation with security forces as investigations continue.
The assault adds to a troubling pattern of recurring gunmen attacks in Plateau State that have worsened insecurity across communities in Nigeria’s middle belt.
