Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has revealed that the gunmen responsible for the recent deadly attack in Jos disguised themselves as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), exploiting residents’ trust to carry out their assault.
The attack, which took place in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area, claimed the lives of at least 28 people and left several others injured, sending shockwaves through the community.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Mutfwang explained that the attackers appeared to have carefully studied local patterns and behaviour, using deception to gain easy access before unleashing violence.
According to the governor, the assailants arrived hooded and conducted themselves in a manner similar to NDLEA operatives, who are known to carry out raids in nearby areas.
“Residents are accustomed to seeing NDLEA officials conducting operations in surrounding communities,” he said. “The attackers exploited this familiarity. They came in that guise, shooting in a similar fashion, and people initially assumed it was a routine operation.”
That hesitation, he noted, proved costly.
“By the time the community realised what was happening, significant damage had already been done. The attackers had also fled before any meaningful resistance could be mounted. It is deeply unfortunate,” he added.
Despite the scale of the tragedy, the governor disclosed that no arrests have yet been made. However, he assured residents that security agencies are actively pursuing credible leads.
“We have actionable intelligence that security operatives are working on,” Mutfwang said. “While no arrests have been made so far, we are hopeful that these leads will help identify and apprehend those responsible.”
He declined to provide further details, citing the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.
Describing the attack as both deliberate and well-coordinated, the governor said the perpetrators demonstrated a high level of sophistication in their execution, raising concerns about broader security implications.
He warned that the incident may have been intended to destabilise Plateau State and undermine the fragile peace the region has experienced in recent months.
Amid rising public anger and grief, Mutfwang urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasising the importance of unity and restraint during this difficult period.
