Gunmen have killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and seriously injured another during a routine surveillance patrol in Niger State.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the attack occurred on October 6, 2026, at about 11:30am along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis.
Akinlabi said the two personnel attached to the Wawa Control Post were attacked by unidentified armed men while carrying out their duties.
The deceased officer was identified as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I) I.U. Babangida, while his colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape.
According to the statement, Musa is currently receiving medical attention.
The NIS said Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, paying tribute to his commitment to duty.
“The Service honours his sacrifice and unwavering commitment to duty,” Akinlabi said.
The agency also extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
It assured both families of its continued support during the difficult period.
On efforts to apprehend the attackers, the Service said it was working with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible.
The NIS condemned the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders despite the incident.
As of the time of the statement, the Service had not announced any arrests in connection with the attack.
