Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have attacked a mosque in Dadinkowa community, Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing four worshippers and injuring five others during evening prayers.
According to information obtained by Starnews NG, the attackers stormed the mosque on Wednesday, opening fire on congregants in what security sources described as a reprisal assault.
It was also reported that the attack followed a failed ambush earlier in the week targeting troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA during an operational tour in the area.
The ambush allegedly aimed at the convoy of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division but was foiled by military personnel, who reportedly neutralised five suspected Lakurawa fighters near Mayama Hill.
Security operatives recovered several weapons and items from the scene, including an OJC gun, a PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, ammunition rounds, two mobile phones, five motorcycles, and a camel bag containing about N840,000.
Authorities said security forces have launched intensified operations to track down those responsible for the mosque attack and restore calm in the affected communities.
The injured victims were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The incident adds to growing concerns over escalating activities of Lakurawa militants across parts of north-west Nigeria. On February 20, suspected fighters reportedly killed at least 33 residents in coordinated attacks on communities in Arewa Local Government Area of the state.
Police authorities have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to strengthen security and prevent further attacks.
