A Nigerian-born singer and songwriter based in the United Kingdom, Talay Riley, has been killed in a stabbing attack in East London.
Riley, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, reportedly died after he was attacked on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown on Friday morning.
According to local reports, emergency services responded to distress calls at about 9 a.m. and rushed to the scene. Despite efforts by paramedics to save his life, the 35-year-old musician was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The Metropolitan Police have since launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, Riley’s family confirmed his death and expressed profound grief over the tragic loss.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
They described him as an exceptionally talented singer and songwriter whose contributions to the music industry earned him Grammy recognition and multiple platinum-selling songwriting credits.
The family added that beyond his musical accomplishments, Riley would be remembered for his generosity, humour and vibrant personality.
“For those who knew and loved him personally, it is his humour, generous spirit and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most,” the statement added.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, colleagues and members of the public following news of his death.
Authorities in London said investigations were ongoing to establish the motive behind the fatal attack and identify those responsible.
Riley was widely respected in the music industry for his songwriting and vocal talents, having worked on several successful projects during his career.
