Senegalese-American music star Akon has opened up about his parenting philosophy, stressing that he intentionally avoids handing wealth and comfort to his children because he wants them to understand the value of hard work and struggle.
Speaking during recent interviews and podcast appearances, the singer explained that many wealthy parents unknowingly raise entitled children by giving them everything they ask for without teaching them responsibility.
According to Akon, children who grow up without experiencing hardship often struggle to manage wealth properly later in life.
“If you give kids everything, they become lazy,” the singer said, adding that when parents are no longer around, such children may not know how to sustain the wealth they inherited.
The music entrepreneur noted that one of his major goals as a father is to ensure his children understand the importance of hustling for their own success instead of depending solely on family riches.
Akon revealed that after his son graduated, he deliberately pushed him to step into the real world and work for his own money.
“I made sure he stepped out and hustled,” he said, explaining that personal struggle helps shape character and build discipline.
The singer also argued that experiencing difficulties is necessary for personal growth, insisting that hardship teaches lessons comfort cannot provide.
According to him, many African parents naturally adopt this style of upbringing because they understand the realities of survival and responsibility.
Akon further shared his views on traditional family structure, stating that he believes fathers should focus on providing for the family while mothers concentrate on raising children.
He argued that excessive pampering or constantly shielding children from life’s realities can make them emotionally weak and dependent.
On financial discipline, the singer also advised people to remain careful with money despite their wealth.
“If you want to stay rich, stay stingy,” Akon said during an appearance on the Impaulsive podcast.
His comments have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users describing his mindset as a reflection of “real African parenting,” while others debated whether children of wealthy celebrities should still be allowed to experience hardship.
