Veteran Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a highly anticipated return to acting after landing a major role in Wahala, an upcoming drama series produced by BBC Studios.

The project marks Nnaji’s first major acting role in about eight years, following her last appearance in the critically acclaimed Nollywood film Lionheart released in 2018.

Lionheart made history as one of the first Nigerian films to gain global attention on Netflix, helping to expand international recognition for Nollywood productions.

According to reports on Wednesday, Wahala is a six-part television drama adapted from the novel written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko.

The series is expected to air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.

Nnaji joins an impressive cast featuring Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo and Susan Wokoma.

The drama centres on the lives of four Nigerian-British women living in London whose friendships are tested as hidden secrets, emotional tensions and painful memories begin to surface.

Industry observers say the project could mark a significant comeback for Genevieve Nnaji, who has remained largely absent from acting despite continued influence and popularity within the African film industry.

Reacting to the new role, Nnaji expressed excitement about joining the production and working alongside the creative team behind the series.

“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said.

Nnaji is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nollywood and has played a major role in the global expansion of the Nigerian film industry over the years.

Her return is expected to generate significant excitement among movie lovers and fans across Africa and beyond, especially as anticipation builds for the release of the BBC drama series.
