The Federal Road Safety Corps has advised motorists observing fasting to take regular rest breaks in order to prevent road crashes.
The Corps Commander in charge of the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway corridor, Nasir Mohammed, gave the advice in an interview on Friday, noting that the warning became necessary following the commencement of fasting by Christian and Muslim faithful.
He explained that fasting could lead to fatigue and dehydration, which may affect concentration while driving.
According to him, motorists should ensure they rest after every four hours of driving before returning to the wheel.
Mohammed also cautioned drivers against over speeding and wrongful overtaking, stressing that such actions could result in avoidable tragedies.
He urged all road users to strictly obey traffic rules and prioritise safety at all times.
“We are appealing to motorists, especially Muslims and Christians who are fasting, to always observe the rest after every four hours of driving, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
“Also, all motorists are enjoined to drive to stay alive; Wishing all safer roads and fuller life,” he said.
The advisory comes as Christians observe the Lenten season while Muslims continue the Ramadan fast.
