The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that seven people lost their lives while 70 others sustained injuries in a lone road accident that occurred in Kano State.
The Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawal, made this known in a statement issued by the FRSC Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, explaining that 28 passengers escaped unhurt in the incident.
According to the statement, the crash happened at about 8:35 a.m. along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja, prompting an emergency response from FRSC officials within minutes of receiving a distress call.
Muhammed-Lawal said the accident involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was conveying both passengers and goods at the time of the crash.
He disclosed that a total of 105 persons were involved, with seven confirmed dead and 70 others, made up of 55 males and 15 females, suffering varying degrees of injuries.
The sector commander attributed the accident to speeding and loss of control, worsened by the unsafe practice of carrying passengers alongside goods.
He noted that the incident was a single-vehicle crash and that the condition of the road was good, adding that no items were recovered at the scene.
The injured victims were evacuated to several hospitals, including Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital in Kano, Gezawa General Hospital, Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Nasarawa, where they are receiving medical attention.
Muhammed-Lawal expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a quick recovery.
He also warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against speeding, reckless driving and the illegal transportation of passengers in goods vehicles, stressing that such practices continue to cause avoidable loss of lives.
The FRSC boss further urged road users to remain safety conscious and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to protect lives and property.
