Two former Inspectors-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and Usman Alkali Baba, have officially declared their interests in the 2027 governorship elections in Nasarawa State and Yobe State respectively.
Adamu, who served as Nigeria’s police chief between 2019 and 2021, declared his intention to contest the Nasarawa governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress during a meeting with members of the party’s State Working Committee in Lafia.
The former police boss said his decision followed what he described as a “clarion call” from the people of Nasarawa, who he said believed in his leadership experience and capacity to move the state forward.
Adamu pledged to run an inclusive and transparent administration focused on development across key sectors if elected governor. He is seeking to succeed Governor Abdullahi Sule, whose second term will expire in 2027.
Reports also indicate that supporters recently purchased the APC expression of interest and nomination forms for the former IGP ahead of the party primaries.
Meanwhile, former IGP Usman Alkali Baba has entered the Yobe governorship race, also on the APC platform, declaring that he possesses the experience and credibility needed to lead the state.
Baba announced his ambition after submitting his nomination forms in Abuja, stating that he intends to build on the achievements of the current administration while prioritising security, agriculture, healthcare, education and youth empowerment.
The former police chief also dismissed reports of a planned consensus arrangement within the APC in Yobe State, insisting he had not agreed to step down for any aspirant.
He said insecurity remains one of the major challenges facing Yobe and vowed to deploy his experience in security management to improve safety and stimulate economic growth across the state.
