Panic gripped passengers and airport workers on Wednesday after a fire broke out at a terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, triggering an immediate evacuation.
According to eyewitness accounts, thick smoke suddenly filled the airport’s temporary terminal building, causing confusion as travellers, airline crew, and staff rushed to exit the facility.
Sources within the airport said the incident occurred shortly after an Ethiopian Airlines flight had completed boarding and departed, raising concerns among those still within the terminal at the time.
“The terminal suddenly caught fire, and smoke spread rapidly across the building. Everyone—passengers, crew, and staff—had to be evacuated immediately,” a source disclosed.
Emergency responders from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) were quickly mobilised, deploying firefighters to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Another witness described the initial moments as chaotic but noted that security personnel acted swiftly to restore order and guide people to safety.
“There was panic at first, but officials quickly stepped in and directed everyone out. The situation is now under control,” the witness said.
As of the time of reporting, authorities had yet to determine the cause of the fire, and no casualties had been confirmed.
