FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly weighed in on the controversial racism allegations involving Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior and Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, signalling a shift towards stricter conduct rules in global football. Infantino’s remarks came on 1 March 2026 during an interview after the issue dominated headlines following a UEFA Champions League play‑off match in Lisbon on 17 February 2026, where Vinícius accused Prestianni of using a racist slur before the latter covered his mouth; a gesture that deepened the controversy.
Infantino argued that players who cover their mouths while addressing opponents should be sent off, saying such behaviour should be presumed suspicious and might conceal offensive language; especially in incidents with discriminatory consequences. This position has fed into discussions at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) about new rules aimed at strengthening anti‑racism measures on the pitch.
The Italian‑Swiss football chief’s comments come amid UEFA’s ongoing investigation into the Prestianni case, in which the player has been provisionally suspended and could face an extended ban if found guilty of racist conduct. Infantino’s firm tone reflects FIFA’s broader efforts to combat racism in football and promote clearer behavioural standards ahead of major tournaments.
