Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, has officially missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the final list of countries selected for the intercontinental play-off tournament excluded the West African giants.
The confirmation emerged on Tuesday, March 4, 2026, after the world football governing body, FIFA, released the official list of six countries scheduled to compete for the final two qualification slots for the tournament. The teams named include Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname, effectively shutting the door on Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the global football showpiece.
The development follows Nigeria’s painful defeat to DR Congo in the African play-off final played in Morocco in November 2025, where the Super Eagles lost through a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1.
Although the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) later filed a petition alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the qualifiers, FIFA’s latest confirmation of the play-off lineup indicates that the Congolese side will proceed to represent Africa in the decisive tournament scheduled for March 26–31, 2026, in Mexico.
Nigeria’s absence means the three-time African champions will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive edition after also failing to qualify for Qatar 2022.
