The Federal Government has unveiled seven herbal medicinal products developed by the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) for the management of several health conditions, including hepatitis B, hypertension, high cholesterol, peptic ulcer, and some forms of cancer.
The products were presented on Wednesday during an official visit by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, to the agency’s headquarters in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NNMDA, Prof. Martins Emeje, said the products were developed as part of efforts to promote indigenous medicine and provide standardized herbal remedies with appropriate dosage.
According to him, the newly unveiled products include Namdavir for the management of hepatitis B, Namdacid for peptic ulcer disease, and Turmegol, which is intended for the prevention and management of colorectal, ovarian and prostate cancers.
Other products introduced are Namdorol for high cholesterol and hypertension, Namgor, described as a natural aphrodisiac, and Zobo Tea, formulated for people living with hypertension.
Emeje said herbal medicines are gaining wider acceptance because they are increasingly being produced in standardized forms that ensure quality, safety and proper dosage.
Also speaking, the Consul General of India in Lagos, Shri Kannan, called for stronger collaboration between Nigeria and India in the field of traditional medicine.
He said both countries could partner in medicinal plant research, scientific validation, quality control, biodiversity conservation, training, academic exchange and innovation to strengthen natural healthcare systems.
Kannan noted that Nigeria and India share a rich heritage in traditional medicine and expressed optimism that deeper cooperation would advance research and improve healthcare outcomes in both countries.
