The Federal Government has announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting indigenous industries.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the decision on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said the new policy is designed to ensure government spending supports local production while creating more opportunities for Nigeria’s textile industry.
According to the minister, Adire is already produced across several states, making it a suitable alternative for the scheme’s official uniform.
“It is Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have producers in Ogun, Kwara and other places with textile industries. We want government spending to benefit our own economy,” Olawande said.
He explained that adopting Adire would encourage local manufacturing, strengthen indigenous businesses and create greater demand for Nigerian-made fabrics.
The minister also revealed that the Federal Government is reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure corps members are posted in line with their academic qualifications and professional skills.
According to him, the reforms are intended to improve the relevance of the national service programme while making greater use of the expertise of graduates across different sectors of the economy.
