By Paul Joseph

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the feeding allocation for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, with the revised funding expected to take effect in 2027.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during an interaction with members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra.

Nafiu said the Budget Office had been notified of the upward review, although he did not disclose the new allocation or the percentage increase.

He urged corps members to develop sound financial habits by avoiding extravagant spending and embracing regular savings to secure their financial future.

The director-general commended Nigerian youths for their resilience and dedication to national service, while encouraging them to make the most of their service year.

On safety, Nafiu advised corps members to avoid travelling after 6 p.m., urging those on the road at that time to suspend their journeys and continue the following morning.

He also cautioned against sleeping in public places or gathering in groups at filling stations while travelling, warning that such practices could expose them to security threats.

He advised corps members facing security challenges to seek assistance at military formations, police stations or Department of State Services (DSS) offices and contact the NYSC emergency hotline.

Addressing infrastructure challenges at the Obubra camp, Nafiu said efforts would be intensified to engage relevant stakeholders in improving and rehabilitating camp facilities.

He further urged corps members to acquire practical and vocational skills that could enhance their employability and create opportunities for self-reliance beyond their academic qualifications.

According to him, skills in areas such as cosmetology, traditional hairstyling and other vocational trades could provide additional livelihood opportunities.

Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, described the director-general’s visit as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of corps members.

Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered at the orientation camp, noting that they had successfully adapted to the camp’s structured programme.
