The Federal Government has approved a revised Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), a move expected to strengthen career development, improve staff welfare and enhance the agency’s capacity to deliver weather and climate services across the country.
The approval was conveyed to the Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike on Sunday, through a letter issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The document confirmed that the review followed extensive consultations and field assessments conducted in line with the Federal Government’s Standard Operating Procedure for reviewing Schemes of Service.
According to the approval, the revised structure aligns NiMet’s career framework with current public service standards while addressing gaps identified in existing professional cadres. It also creates clearer career progression pathways and reflects the specialised responsibilities of the agency as Nigeria’s foremost meteorological institution.
The new Scheme of Service introduces a structured career system covering Junior, Intermediate and Professional/Officer cadres in line with existing public service policies. It also retains specialised professional positions unique to NiMet while ensuring consistency with approved federal civil service regulations.
The government directed the agency to implement the revised scheme in compliance with Public Service Rules, establishment circulars and other regulations governing appointments, promotions, career advancement and personnel management.
The approval further states that officers on the Junior and Intermediate cadres can only advance beyond their terminal grade levels after obtaining the required bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification through the approved conversion and upgrading process.
The Federal Government said the reform is aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, promoting staff development and ensuring the agency is better positioned to fulfil its mandate of providing reliable weather and climate information.
NiMet plays a critical role in supporting key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, aviation, maritime operations, disaster risk management and environmental planning through weather forecasting and climate monitoring services.
The approval is expected to boost staff morale and reinforce ongoing reforms within the agency as Nigeria continues efforts to improve climate resilience and strengthen its weather forecasting capabilities.
