The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has called for a thorough investigation, accountability, and justice in the alleged sexual abuse of a minor in Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia LGA of Abia State.
In a statement issued on Friday in Umuahia, the Executive Director of FENRAD, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, expressed concern over the incident, describing it as a serious violation of the rights and dignity of a child.
The organisation said the allegation, which has sparked public outrage, highlights the urgent need for stronger child protection mechanisms and stricter enforcement of laws designed to safeguard children from abuse and exploitation.
FENRAD condemned all forms of sexual violence against children, stressing that every child deserves protection from abuse, violence, and degrading treatment.
The group urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to conduct a transparent, impartial, and speedy investigation into the matter.
According to the statement, “Where sufficient evidence exists, the suspect should be prosecuted diligently and in accordance with the law. Justice must be pursued without fear, favour, intimidation, or undue influence.”
The rights organisation noted that child sexual abuse violates several legal provisions, including the Child Rights Act 2003, the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, relevant sections of the Criminal Code, and the Child Rights Law of Abia State.
It further stated that such acts also contravene international treaties to which Nigeria is a signatory, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
FENRAD, however, urged residents and stakeholders to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course, warning against actions capable of compromising investigations or judicial proceedings.
The organisation also called on the Abia State Government, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, security agencies, child protection institutions, traditional rulers, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to work together to ensure that the victim receives adequate support.
It said such support should include medical care, psychosocial assistance, legal aid, and protection from stigma or victimisation.
The group further advocated sustained public awareness campaigns, community-based child protection systems, school safeguarding policies, and stronger accountability measures to tackle sexual and gender-based violence against children.
“No child should live in fear. No survivor should be denied justice. No perpetrator should escape accountability,” the statement added.
FENRAD reaffirmed its commitment to promoting human rights, child protection, and access to justice, while pledging continued support for efforts aimed at creating safer communities for children across Nigeria.
