Catholic priest, Father Ejike Mbaka, has sparked controversy after suggesting that the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State may form part of a wider political plot aimed at destabilising President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking in a recent sermon, Mbaka urged Nigerians not to be swayed by fear or political manipulation, alleging that similar tactics had been used in the past to undermine former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Let Nigerians not be deceived. That was what they did to Jonathan,” he said, suggesting that the country could be witnessing a repeat of events designed to create public panic and pressure for a change in leadership.
Describing the situation as politically motivated, the priest claimed the abductions were intended to spread fear and unrest across the country. According to him, such incidents are aimed at influencing public opinion against the government rather than being isolated criminal acts.
Mbaka further questioned the circumstances surrounding the attack, expressing concern over how the children were taken and urging security agencies to act swiftly. He called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to intensify efforts to track down the abductors and secure the safe return of the victims.
In his remarks, the cleric also condemned those behind acts of violence and insecurity in the country, offering prayers against individuals he described as sponsors of terrorism.
His comments have since generated mixed reactions, with some viewing them as a political interpretation of worsening insecurity, while others caution against linking criminal activity to unverified political conspiracies.
