A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has narrated to the Enugu State Police Command how his 27-year-old girlfriend, Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, allegedly died following an argument over HIV.
Emmanuel gave the account while being interviewed by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a video shared on the command’s social media platforms on Friday.
Ugwu, according to the police, was a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, and had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps programme.
The suspect said the incident occurred around midnight on September 19, 2026, after he told Ugwu that he could cure people living with hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis.
According to him, Ugwu accused him of infecting her with HIV, resulting in an argument that later became physical.
Emmanuel claimed Ugwu picked up a pestle and hit him during the confrontation, after which he took it from her and struck her, causing her to collapse.
He further told the police that he subsequently used a machete to inflict injuries on her wrist, head and neck.
The suspect said he locked the toilet and master bedroom after the incident and allegedly wrapped Ugwu’s body in a black nylon bag before moving it into the toilet.
The body was later discovered after neighbours reportedly noticed an offensive odour coming from the apartment and broke into the premises.
Emmanuel also admitted damaging Ugwu’s Samsung phone, saying he feared the device could be used to trace him.
He said her iPhone had already been switched off before the incident after she complained that it was faulty.
The suspect said he met Ugwu through Facebook in 2023 and renewed their relationship after she returned to Enugu in 2026.
He claimed he had planned to marry her and had even spoken with her mother before the incident.
When asked about the circumstances surrounding the killing, Emmanuel said he was not fully aware of his actions at the time and suggested that he may have been under the influence of a substance.
He pleaded for forgiveness and mercy, saying he had been praying over the incident.
The Enugu State Police Command said the deceased’s parents and siblings had been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police.
The command also confirmed that Emmanuel had been interviewed and that the Commissioner directed investigators to conclude the case and charge the suspect to court.
Police urged members of the public, particularly young women, to keep trusted persons informed about their whereabouts when going out.
The incident was first reported after the police announced Emmanuel’s arrest on September 23, 2026.
According to the police, neighbours discovered Ugwu’s decomposing remains after an offensive odour emanated from the apartment, where the body was allegedly concealed in nylon and kept inside a toilet.
The suspect was reportedly arrested after being rescued from an angry mob.
