Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has accused the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government of failing to address Nigeria’s electricity crisis, saying millions of households and businesses remain burdened by unreliable power supply and rising tariffs.
Atiku, who is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, made the criticism in a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Media Aide, Phrank Shuaibu.
He said Nigerians were tired of government explanations over the persistent electricity challenges, insisting that the administration should prioritise stable power supply instead of engaging in political arguments.
“Tinubu’s electricity excuses cannot light a single home. Nigerians need power, not excuses,” Atiku stated.
The former Vice-President questioned the justification for increased electricity charges while consumers continued to experience inadequate supply.
He observed that electricity customers across the country were classified into five tariff bands, with Band A consumers in some areas paying about N209.50 per unit before VAT.
He noted that although tariffs differ across electricity distribution companies and states, consumers in different categories continued to face power supply difficulties.
Atiku described the situation as an additional burden on families and businesses already struggling with rising living costs.
He also expressed concern over the government’s plan to discontinue electricity subsidies from 2027, demanding an explanation of how the policy would affect consumers’ bills.
The ADC presidential candidate said the administration needed to provide clear answers on the future of electricity pricing rather than leave Nigerians uncertain about the financial implications of the planned policy.
