President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the latest amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act are designed to improve Nigeria’s democratic system, not to serve partisan interests.
In a message shared on his official X account on Wednesday after signing the revised legislation, the President explained that the changes focus on refining the country’s electoral procedures.
According to him, the amendments are meant to address identified shortcomings in the legal framework, enhance clarity for election officials and voters, and strengthen overall transparency.
Tinubu noted that every election cycle presents an opportunity for reflection and improvement. He emphasized that mature democracies regularly review their laws to ensure they reflect practical experience and evolving realities.
The President maintained that the reforms are centered on institutional efficiency rather than political advantage.
He said the goal is to reinforce procedures, eliminate ambiguities, and bolster public confidence in how elections are conducted.
Highlighting the importance of trust in the democratic process, Tinubu stressed that citizens must feel assured when casting their votes and confident in the credibility of announced results. He underscored that such trust is built intentionally through strong legislation and faithful implementation.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to democratic consolidation, the President pledged continued efforts to fortify Nigeria’s institutions. He also praised the National Assembly for its cooperation and sense of responsibility in finalizing the amendments, adding that the task of strengthening democracy remains ongoing.
