Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a Nigerian-American citizen, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, over an alleged luxury vehicle importation scam involving more than $320,000 (approximately ₦436 million).
The anti-graft agency disclosed that Adams is under investigation for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to the EFCC, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is linked to a syndicate allegedly involved in the fraudulent sale and importation of luxury vehicles from the United States to Nigeria.
Investigators allege that while residing in the United States, Adams advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG for sale to prospective buyers in Nigeria.
The commission said two buyers subsequently paid a total of $320,000 for the vehicle.
One of the complainants, Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike, reportedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another victim, Godson Azubuike Amans, allegedly transferred $175,000.
The EFCC further revealed that its investigation uncovered previous legal issues involving the suspect in the United States relating to motor vehicle offences.
According to the commission, Adams was arrested upon his arrival in Nigeria following intelligence gathering and surveillance by EFCC operatives.
The anti-corruption agency stated that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon their conclusion.
