A viral video has intensified political tensions in Edo State after an aide linked to Governor Monday Okpebholo was seen making derogatory remarks against opposition figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, while also issuing threats toward members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
On 24 April 2026, the footage circulating on social media showed the aide speaking in the presence of the State Police Commissioner, where he allegedly described Obi in insulting terms and warned that ADC members operating in the state would be handed over to security authorities.
The incident has drawn public criticism, particularly over the perceived normalisation of inflammatory political language within official settings.
The video has further complicated the already tense political atmosphere in Edo, where party rivalry between the ruling structure and opposition groups has remained highly charged.
While reactions online have been sharply divided, critics argue that such conduct risks escalating political hostility and undermining institutional neutrality.
So far, there has been no formal clarification from the state government regarding the aide’s comments, but the controversy adds another layer to ongoing debates about political civility, opposition safety, and the conduct of public officials in Nigeria’s democratic space.
