The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure amid reported moves within the legislature to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed on Monday by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a post on Facebook.
The development comes against the backdrop of reported moves by some lawmakers to initiate proceedings for his removal, although details of the issues surrounding the political pressure were not immediately made public.
Adodo-Ebojele indicated that further information on the circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s departure would be provided later.
Agbebaku became Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023 and presided over the eighth Assembly.
